Lucile Ferreux: Sperm Racing Event Sparks Debate on Male Fertility Awareness and Scientific Accuracy

Lucile Ferreux, Medical Director at Cesar Fertility, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“A live sperm race in front of 1,000 spectators. It happened in the USA. And that raises questions.

April 25, 2025 in Los Angeles: first ‘Sperm Race’ in the world. Two students, a microscopic 2 mm track, a golden trophy, Ty Dolla $ign in concert, 450 million cumulative views. Behind the event: Eric Zhu, 17, who is already preparing for the Sperm Racing World Cup 2026 in San Francisco, 128 countries, $100,000 in prizes.

The argument displayed? To raise awareness of the decline in male fertility, about -50% sperm concentration between 1973 and 2018.

Except that…

The speed of a sperm cell is not a criterion of fertility. What counts is the progressive mobility of an entire sample, its concentration, its morphology, not the sprint of an isolated swimmer.

The races were reprocessed into 3D animation after recording, with controversy over potentially pre-recorded results.

And above all: Fertility is reduced to individual performance.

What I remember:

Finally, we are talking about male fertility, and why not in this way in order to reach a young audience

But it is not well talked about by individualizing a largely environmental problem.

Some point to a pronatalist and masculinist resonance: fertility reduced to an individual, measurable performance, ‘improveable by willpower’ We sell a ‘performance’ where a biology should be explained.

Male fertility deserves better than a viral show. It deserves accessible check-ups, prevention, and a dialogue with a professional.
