Marco Zaccaria: A Closer Look at the Hidden Diversity of Endometriosis Lesions

Marco Zaccaria, Global Product Manager at H.S. Hospital Service SpA, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Endometriosis lesions vary widely in colour based on age and activity, appearing as black, brown, blue, red, white, or clear spots

While classic ‘gunshot’ lesions are black/dark-brown, active lesions are often red or clear blisters, and older or healed lesions appear white/fibrotic

Key Colors and Characteristics:

  • Red (Active): Often ‘flame-like’ or small vesicular lesions, indicating active, hemorrhagic tissue with high inflammation
  • Black/Brown (Old): Commonly described as ‘powder-burn’ or ‘gunshot’ lesions, representing old hemorrhages and fibrosis
  • Blue: Long standed disease that has been bleeding and healing repeatedly over many years
  • White (Fibrotic): Typically represents healed or scarred peritoneal tissue
  • Clear (Subtle): Vesicular, often small blisters that are difficult to see but can be highly painful
  • Yellow (mixed colours): Lesions can also appear yellow or show a combination of colors, often indicating different stages of development

Why Colors Vary: the varied colors reflect the aging process of the lesions, progressing from red to black and finally to white

Visibility: Red and clear lesions are sometimes called ‘subtle’ or ‘atypical,’ yet they can be as active and painful as traditional black lesions”
