MFM Specialists and Genetic Counselors Collaborating to Support High-Risk Pregnancy Care – National Society of Genetic Counselors

National Society of Genetic Counselors shared a post on LinkedIn:

“MFM subspecialists are trained to work as part of a comprehensive care team.

That means collaboration is at the core. MFM specialists work alongside obstetricians, nurses, midwives, genetic counselors and other specialists, not instead of them. Your existing care team doesn’t go away.

‘As a genetic counselor, I have proudly spent my entire career working with MFMs, both in the clinic and in the development and implementation of innovative diagnostics,’ says NSGC President Carrie Haverty, MS, CGC. ‘Their work is critical to both maternal health and neonatal health. The collaboration between genetic counselors and MFMs is essential to supporting high-risk pregnancy care. NSGC is proud to collaborate with The Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine during High-Risk Pregnancy Awareness Week and every other week of the year to ensure patients have the healthiest pregnancy possible.’

Consultation and specialized testing are part of this care. In many cases, your OB refers you to an MFM for expert eyes on a specific concern or for advanced testing that requires subspecialty training.

For patients with more complex needs, an MFM subspecialist may take the lead on managing your entire pregnancy, coordinating every aspect of your care under one roof.
