50 Years Since the First World Congress on Menopause: A Multidisciplinary Vision – IMS

“IMS Co-Founder Prof. Wulf Utian in conversation with Prof. Steven Goldstein, Chair of the Council of Affiliated Menopause Societies (CAMS).

What started as a handful of passionate experts eager to discuss menopause research grew into three consecutive yearly meetings in Geneva, hosted by the International Health Foundation.

From the outset, the vision was multidisciplinary – not just OB-GYNs, but anthropologists, psychologists, cardiologists, bone health specialists and more, all united by one shared focus.

This year we celebrate 50 years since those initial meetings culminated in the first World Congress on Menopause in 1976, and this global community gathers for Rio 2026.

Wulf H. Utian, Professor Emeritus of Reproductive Biology, Case Western Reserve University, is one of the three original Founders who, following the first World Congress in 1976, formally established the International Menopause Society in 1978, of which he is Honorary Past President, and the Founder of CAMS.

An early pioneer of infertility microsurgery and in vitro fertilization, accomplishing the first surrogate IVF pregnancy, he started the world’s first menopause research center at the University of Cape Town in 1967.

He is a dedicated advocate for women’s health, achieving national and international recognition for his work and being interviewed regularly by the world’s leading media. He is the recipient of numerous national and international honors and awards.

He has personally inspired many physicians and researchers to focus their work on menopause, not only improving the treatment of women around the age of menopause but also expanding the research that informs such practice. He is the author of several books, including his successful self-help book ‘The Utian Strategy – Is this your problem or is this my problem?’ ”
