Corneliu Bolbocean: Understanding the Long-Term Impact of Miscarriage on Women’s Health

“Excited to share our new article in Value in Health – An HEOR Publication!
‘The Compounding Burden of Pregnancy Loss: A Longitudinal Analysis of Quality of Life Trajectories Following Miscarriage’
Around 1 in 4 recognized pregnancies ends in a miscarriage, yet the longer‑term health-related quality of life (HRQoL) burden has been poorly understood. In this study with co-authors Arri Coomarasamy, Leah Fitzsimmons, Rosinder Kaur and Adam Devall here’s what we found
- Compounding burden after recurrent loss:
Women with ≥3 miscarriages experienced an additional 0.11–0.12 EQ‑5D‑5L utility decrement at 3–6 months compared with women with a single miscarriage. - The second loss is a critical tipping point:
At 3–6 months, women with two miscarriages were 30 percentage points less likely than those with one to report optimal mental health outcomes. - Recovery is slowest when support is most needed:
The 3–6‑month window after miscarriage is a period of pronounced vulnerability for women with multiple losses.
Implications
Findings support earlier tier escalation and tailored psychosocial and clinical support for women with ≥2 miscarriages, rather than waiting until a third loss.
Grateful to my co-authors Arri Coomarasamy, Leah Fitzsimmons, Rosinder Kaur, and Adam Devall, to NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) School for Primary Care Research, NIHR ARC Oxford and Thames Valley (OxTV) and Tommy’s, and to the women who generously shared their experiences.”
