New IJGO and FIGO Guideline for the Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment of Infertility
FIGO (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics) shared a post on LinkedIn about a new guideline by M. Louise Hull et al. published in IJGO:
“The latest IJGO FIGO review highlights the WHO ‘Guideline for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infertility’ as a key step in recognising infertility as a medical condition that needs prevention, diagnosis, treatment and policy support. This is crucial for one in six people affected by infertility and helps policymakers address fertility decline.
The guideline includes 40 recommendations and six good practice statements, focusing on clear diagnostic steps, cost-effective care, psychosocial support and shared decision-making. It also recommends routine preventive measures like fertility education, lifestyle counseling, stopping smoking, and early STI management to improve reproductive health.
The guideline matches FIGO’s vision for fair, locally adapted fertility care. FIGO supports making fertility services available to everyone, regardless of background, and urges countries to include infertility care in national health strategies, especially in low- and middle-resource settings.
The WHO guidelines offer practical, affordable solutions for different health systems. While there are still gaps-such as in fertility preservation, third-party reproduction, and male infertility-this guideline gives a solid framework for global clinical practice and reframes infertility as a public health priority.”
