Should You Stop Ozempic Before Trying for a Baby? – Fertility Plus

“Should you stop Ozempic before trying for a baby?
Ozempic, Wegovy, Saxenda… GLP 1 ‘weight loss’ injections are everywhere right now. But what happens if you’re on them when you get pregnant – especially before you even realize you’re pregnant?
A huge Danish study looked at 756,636 pregnancies and zoomed in on 529 where women had used GLP 1 drugs like semaglutide or liraglutide in the 8 weeks before or after their last period – the earliest stage of pregnancy when organs are forming.
Here’s what they found:
- There was a higher risk of premature birth – but only in women using GLP 1 to treat diabetes.
- In these women, the chance of delivering early was roughly 9–11%, about 70–84% higher than those not on GLP 1.
- When GLP 1 was used just for weight loss, there was no clear increase in preterm birth or other major complications.
In simple terms: the underlying diabetes seems to be the real problem, not the GLP 1 drug itself. That means:
- If you have diabetes, getting your blood sugar and overall health optimized before pregnancy is crucial.
- If you were using GLP 1 purely for weight loss and then found out you’re pregnant, this study is somewhat reassuring – but these drugs are still not recommended in pregnancy.
