Panicos Shangaris: Is Chronic Histiocytic Intervillositis a Form of Maternal Anti Fetal Rejection?
Panicos Shangaris, Consultant in Obstetrics, Maternal, and Fetal Medicine at Central Health London, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper puublished in Journal of Reproductive Immunology:
“Delighted to share our latest work on Chronic Histiocytic Intervillositis (CHI), a rare but devastating placental disorder with significant implications for pregnancy outcomes.
‘Chronic histiocytic intervillositis: Insights into immunopathogenesis and prospective treatments’
In this review, we explore:
- The emerging alloimmune hypothesis: is CHI a form of maternal anti-fetal rejection?
- Key immunological pathways, including complement activation, CD8+ T cells, and inflammasomes
- The role of anti-HLA antibodies and abnormal HLA expression
- Why current treatments remain limited — and where future therapies may lie
CHI remains under-recognised, often diagnosed only after pregnancy loss, and carries a high recurrence risk. A deeper understanding of its biology is essential if we are to move toward earlier diagnosis, personalised care, and prevention.
Grateful to collaborate with an outstanding multidisciplinary team across fetal medicine and immunology.”
