Robert Gilchrist: Is There Anything More Important in IVF Than Eggs?
Robert Gilchrist, Research Lead of the Discipline of Women’s Health at UNSW, shared on LinkedIn about a paper he co-authored with colleagues, published in Human Reproduction:
“Egg quality – is there anything more important in IVF than eggs?
No…absolutely not – oocyte quantity and quality are fundamentally rate-limiting to IVF success.
But what makes a good egg? Well, not surprisingly, it’s complicated….!
Here, in Human Reproduction, post-doc Emily Frost takes a deep dive into the:
protein make-up of high-, medium-, and low-quality mouse oocytes and their cumulus cells, from in vivo matured, CAPA-IVM, and standard IVM oocytes, respectively.
Turns out a good quality oocyte, being the mega cargo vessel that it is for future embryo growth, needs to correctly store and be able to degrade proteins, whereas its cumulus cells have critical roles in ROS detoxification, including on behalf of the oocyte.”
