Shiva Vikas Kumar: Could Microplastics Be Reaching Our Reproductive System?

Shiva Vikas Kumar, Head of Products and Strategy at Safe Tree,  shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper by Bogdan Doroftei et al. published in Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety:

”Could microplastics be reaching our reproductive system?

I came across a recent study that genuinely made me pause.

Researchers detected microplastics in the ovarian follicular fluid of 14 out of 18 women undergoing assisted reproductive treatment.

A few findings stood out to me:

  • Microplastics were found in the environment surrounding developing eggs.
  • Most particles were extremely small – less than 10 µm.
  • Higher microplastic levels were associated with FSH levels.
  • The findings raise questions about their potential impact on egg quality, ovarian reserve/egg count and overall reproductive health.

Of course, we need to be careful here. This was a small study, and it does not prove that microplastics cause infertility. More research is needed to understand what these particles actually mean for fertility and IVF outcomes.

But it does make me wonder:

As we become more aware of what we eat, drink, and breathe, should we also be paying more attention to the environmental factors that may influence reproductive health?

Infertility is complex and rarely comes down to one single factor. But studies like this remind us that there may still be pieces of the puzzle we don’t fully understand.

For everyone working in the fertility and IVF ecosystem, this is certainly an area worth keeping an eye on.
