Shizuko Takahashi: What about the “Biological Clock” in Men?

Shizuko Takahashi, Research Fellow at the National University of Singapore, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper she co-authored with Rie Iizuka, published in Fertility and Sterility:

“I’m pleased to share a piece we wrote for Fertility and Sterility, ‘Male reproductive aging and self-fulfilling prophecies in medicine.’

We hear a great deal about the ‘biological clock’ in women. I certainly experienced pressure myself.

But what about men?

Male reproductive aging is increasingly recognized as relevant to fertility and reproductive outcomes, yet assumptions about age, fertility, and parenthood can themselves shape clinical practice and reproductive choices.

In this piece, I explore how medical expectations can become self-fulfilling prophecies-and why we need to think more carefully about how reproductive aging is discussed, studied, and communicated.

I hope it contributes to a broader conversation about aging, reproductive medicine, and the assumptions we bring into clinical care and how those assumptions create the reality we live in.”
