“Prepregnancy care and counseling encompass a range of interventions to improve maternal and neonatal outcomes. Worldwide, 1.9 billion individuals are eligible for reproductive health care.

In 2023, global maternal mortality, defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as death during pregnancy, during childbirth, or within 42 days of delivery, was 197/100 000 live births, compared with 18.6/100 000 live births in the US.

Medical conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and infections are the second leading cause of maternal death.

This Review summarizes the current evidence for prepregnancy care and counseling with a primary care focus.”
