Danielle Uses Her Voice and Story to Help Create Change – Preeclampsia Foundation
Preeclampsia Foundation shared a post on LinkedIn:
”On day 5 postpartum, Danielle Babcock Sapienza experienced what started as a migraine. She experienced blurry vision and swelling, but did not know that what she was experiencing was symptoms of preeclampsia. That evening, she experienced two seizures.
She was rushed to the ER, where staff were frantic–sending her to the neurology floor. It wasn’t until she spoke up and her OB advocated for her that she was transferred to the mother-baby unit. While hospitalized, her blood pressure continued to get higher. She was treated with antihypertensives, magnesium sulfate, and blood thinners.
Danielle was in the hospital for a week, and becasue her daugher wasn’t considered a patient, she could only be with her with a family member was with Danielle. “When you face your own mortality and are referred to as a “maternal near miss” you become grateful just to exist.”
Today, Danielle uses her voice and story to help create change. She is the Preeclampsia Foundation’s Education & Support Manager. She credits the Foundation’s educational materials and patient advocacy for teaching her how to advocate for her own health beyond pregnancy.
