Marco Zaccaria: How Did Endometriosis Affect Marilyn Monroe’s Life?
Marco Zaccaria, Global Product Manager at ESGE European Society Gynecology Endoscopy, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Marilyn Monroe suffered from severe, debilitating endometriosis throughout her adult life
The chronic condition caused her agonizing pelvic pain, miscarriages, and fertility struggles, and frequently led to misdiagnoses of drug addiction or accusations of being ‘difficult’ on set
What about the impact of endometriosis on her life
- Debilitating Pain: Monroe endured chronic pelvic pain and severe dysmenorrhea and her pain was so intense that she negotiated specific clauses in her movie contracts allowing her to pause work during her period
- Infertility and Loss: the condition severely impacted her reproductive system. It was a primary factor in her struggle to have children, contributing to multiple miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies
- Misunderstood Struggles: because she frequently required surgeries and was hospitalized for her condition, she relied on prescription painkillers and this dependency was often mischaracterized by the public and studio executives as substance abuse or recreational drug use
Many patients look to Monroe’s experience as an early example of the isolation and misrepresentation often faced by those living with invisible chronic illnesses.”
