Kanishka Gaur: If You Get Fewer Than 9 Periods a Year, Don’t Ignore It…
Kanishka Gaur, Nutritionist at Heald, shared on LinkedIn:
“If you get fewer than 9 periods a year, don’t ignore it. Your body is telling you that you’re probably not ovulating regularly.
In PCOS, having fewer than 9 menstrual cycles a year is a sign of chronic ovulatory dysfunction. It’s more than just an irregular period. Over time, it can increase the risk of infertility, endometrial hyperplasia, insulin resistance, and metabolic disease.
Latest research and international guidelines show that the goal isn’t just to ‘get a period.’ It’s to restore regular ovulation.
What actually helps?
- Losing just 5 to 10% of body weight if overweight can help restore ovulation in many women.
- Regular resistance training and physical activity improve insulin sensitivity, even without major weight loss.
- Improving sleep and reducing chronic stress support hormonal regulation.
- For insulin-resistant PCOS, metformin remains an evidence-based option.
- Myo-inositol shows promising evidence for improving ovulation and insulin resistance, although it should complement, not replace, medical care.
A period every few months is not your body’s version of ‘normal.’
The sooner ovulation is restored, the better your long-term reproductive and metabolic health.”
