Kate Booth: Are We Measuring What Really Matters in Donor-Egg IVF?

“When I’m reviewing IVF content about egg donation, I can’t help but notice one thing (as a donor-egg recipient).

All the efficacy data is almost always about the donor. Eggs retrieved, egg quality, OHSS risk. It makes sense on the surface, as the donor takes the stimulation drugs, so the donor is what gets measured.

But these aren’t the only outcomes of donor-egg IVF. Really, the only thing a donor-egg recipient wants to know is whether she will have a baby at the end. Not what quality the eggs are, how many there are, or whether her donor had any side effects of the treatments.

In fact, hearing she produced 32 eggs, when the recipient only ever produced 1 or 2 (or none) is almost detrimental – it can land as a quiet confirmation of the very thing you’re grieving. I know, because it happened to me.

This is what patient-voice review really means. Not softening language at the edges, but asking whether the data we lead with is even measuring the right thing for the person it ultimately affects. Donor yield tells you the drug worked. It doesn’t tell you a woman went home with a baby.

If you work in fertility, doctors and MSLs included: is your outcome data measuring the process, or the thing that actually matters?
