Sujoy Dasgupta: Moderating a Discussion on “Luteal Phase Support” at the Progestin Connect Meet
Sujoy Dasgupta, Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Infertility and Sexual Dysfunction at RSV Hospital Private, shared on LinkedIn:
“Honoured to have moderated a discussion on ‘Luteal Phase Support’ at the ‘Progestin Connect Meet’ on 23 August 2026, in the presence of many renowned gynaecologists from the city.
But what exactly is the luteal phase – and why do we sometimes need to support it during IVF?
What is the luteal phase?
After ovulation, the ovary forms a structure called the corpus luteum, which produces progesterone. This hormone prepares and maintains the lining of the uterus so that an embryo can implant and an early pregnancy can continue.
Why is support often needed in IVF?
During IVF, the medicines used to stimulate the ovaries and the process of egg retrieval can interfere with the body’s natural hormonal support.
Therefore, progesterone supplementation is routinely used in most IVF cycles to support the uterine lining and implantation.
But why isn’t it always necessary in a natural cycle?
In a natural cycle, ovulation itself creates a functioning corpus luteum, which naturally produces progesterone.
If ovulation and the corpus luteum are functioning normally, the body may provide adequate luteal support on its own.
So, luteal support is not about giving progesterone to everyone – it is about understanding when the body needs additional support.
That is why the approach may be different in a natural conception cycle and an IVF cycle.”
