Sonia Muliyil: Launching a New Lancet Series on Cardiovascular Disease and Pregnancy at ESC 2026
Sonia Muliyil, Editor-in-Chief at The Lancet Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Women’s Health, shared on LinkedIn:
“It was a pleasure to have launched a cross-journal The Lancet Group Series on Cardiovascular disease and pregnancy with my colleague Chloe Wilson at the 2026 European Society of Cardiology congress.
- Paper 1: Cardiovascular disease in pregnancy: physiology, global burden, risk stratification, and opportunities in care
- Paper 2: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy: risk stratification and management
- Paper 3: Adverse pregnancy outcomes and long-term cardiovascular disease risk
Pregnancy represents a unique period of metabolic, haemodynamic, hormonal, and other changes—changes that can unmask previously undiagnosed cardiovascular disease, exacerbate existing conditions, or precipitate new disease during pregnancy and the postpartum period.
The implications extend well beyond pregnancy itself. The spectrum of cardiovascular disease affecting pregnant women is evolving globally.
We are also at an important inflection point in treatment and management, with care moving from reactive approaches towards earlier prediction, prevention, and personalised care.
Against this backdrop, our three-part series brings together an international, multidisciplinary group of experts to consider cardiovascular disease across the pregnancy continuum.
The aim of the Series was not simply to summarise where the field stands today, but also to highlight where practice is changing, where important gaps remain, and how we can move towards a more equitable, integrated, and life-course approach to cardiovascular health for women worldwide.
Kudos to the authors who brought this to life!”
