Aumatma Simmons: Low AMH Is One of the Most Misunderstood Fertility Markers

Aumatma Simmons, Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer at Madre Fertility, shared on LinkedIn:

”Low AMH is one of the most misunderstood fertility markers, and one of the most likely to be presented to patients as a final verdict rather than a data point.

A few things worth clarifying:

  • AMH reflects the number of follicles in waiting each cycle, not the quality of the eggs within them.
  • The American Society of Reproductive Medicine has noted that AMH is a ‘poor predictor of fecundity in non-infertile women.’ It became a standard marker largely because of its usefulness in predicting IVF stimulation response, not natural conception potential.
  • Ovarian reserve has long been treated as static. There’s a reasonable case that, given the right physiological signals, the body may be able to slow its decline or support improved function.

For patients with low AMH, the path forward isn’t limited to IVF. Options include specialized IVF protocols, egg donation, fertility preservation, and root-cause, holistic approaches addressing the full picture, not just one lab value.

If you work with fertility patients, it’s worth pausing before framing a low AMH result as a closed door.”
