Aysha O’Connor: Why Can 5 Fertility Practitioners Give You 5 Completely Different Answers?
Aysha O’Connor, Fertility Coach at Fertility With Aysha, shared on LinkedIn:
“Why can five fertility practitioners give you five completely different answers – and still leave you no closer to understanding why you’re not pregnant?
I keep having this conversation.
A woman comes to me after months, sometimes years, of appointments.
She’s seen her GP, a fertility specialist, perhaps a naturopath or Chinese medicine practitioner – and sometimes a second or third fertility consultant.
One tells her to lose weight.
Another says her results look fine.
One says IVF is her only option.
Another tells her to keep trying naturally.
Then she’s given a long list of supplements, only to be told by someone else that supplements won’t make a difference.
She walks away more confused than when she arrived.
And she isn’t imagining it.
Each practitioner is usually looking through the lens of their own expertise.
The GP looks at symptoms.
The fertility specialist looks at age, AMH, ovaries, and treatment options.
The naturopath may focus on nutrition, supplements, or individual test results.
But who is connecting it all?
The conventional fertility pathway has an important role: identifying obvious barriers to conception and determining appropriate medical treatment.
Checking the tubes, uterus, ovaries, hormones, and sperm matters.
But sometimes the bigger question is:
What else might be happening beneath the surface?
- Painful periods.
- Irregular cycles.
- Thyroid health.
- Gut health.
- Metabolic health.
- Stress.
- Environmental exposures.
- Emotional trauma from years of trying.
When the body is treated as a series of separate departments, it’s easy to end up with a series of separate opinions.
And still no clear picture.
The confusion isn’t your fault.
You’re trying to make sense of advice that was never joined together in the first place.
The question isn’t simply:
‘What should I try next?’
It’s:
‘Why haven’t the things I’ve already tried worked – and what might my body be telling me?’
That requires looking at the whole picture: egg and sperm health, reproductive health, hormonal health, lifestyle, stress, and the factors that may be influencing your fertility journey.
It also means acknowledging the mind-body connection and the emotional weight of years of fear, disappointment, and uncertainty.
Body. Mind. Spirit.
When women come to me, I don’t want to give them another isolated opinion to add to the pile.
I want to help them make sense of what they’ve already been told, understand what their body may be showing them, and connect the dots.
Specialist advice has its place.
But collecting more separate opinions isn’t the same as having someone step back and look at your fertility journey as a whole.
If you’re exhausted from conflicting advice and still don’t understand what may be standing in the way of conception, send me a message.”
