Justin Houman: 3 Things to Look for in a Male Fertility Specialist

“A note for primary care, OB/GYN, and REI colleagues on male-factor referrals.
By the time couples reach my office, they have usually done extensive research and tried a few things, and there is real frustration attached.
Three points that make the referral productive:
- The complete evaluation: semen analysis, hormone evaluation, and a physical exam to rule out varicocele. DNA fragmentation index testing has a role in selected situations.
- Sub-specialty training matters. A reproductive urologist sees male fertility all day, and the exam findings (varicocele in particular) are easy to miss outside the field.
- Treatment is couple-specific. Male and female age, reproductive potential on both sides, and the couple’s goals shape whether we optimize medically, correct surgically, or coordinate with REI.
