Jordan Abdi: Evaluating Outcomes in Transferring Aneuploid Embryos
Jordan Abdi, Co-Founder and CEO of U-Ploid Biotechnologies, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper by Manuel Viotti et al. published in Fertility and Sterility:
“Fascinating paper just accepted in Fertility and Sterility evaluating outcomes in transferring aneuploid embryos.
Of the 168 transfers of embryos classified as whole-chromosome aneuploid, there were no live births.
The central drivers of these aneuploidies are segregation errors in the oocyte, especially in patients of advanced reproductive age.
The mean age at retrieval in this study was 40.5, which means that while the conclusion is that 168 embryo transfers failed, they reflect eggs that had already failed.
These are chromosomal segregation errors that carried forward through fertilisation, culture, biopsy, freeze and transfer, and only then counted at the end.
By contrast, segmental errors, which do not track in prevalence with age, behaved very differently, with a live birth rate of 17.1%.
PGT-A has never been better at identifying which embryos will not work; however, it cannot change how many will.
Incredibly important work that underpins the need for interventions to improve egg quality in women of advanced reproductive age.”
