Laura Okafor: Taking the Conversation about Perimenopause Awareness to Capitol Hill

“About four years ago, Claire Gill and I had one of those conversations where you start with, ‘Why doesn’t this exist?’ and somehow end up deciding you should probably just make it happen.
We were talking about Perimenopause Awareness Month.
At the time, perimenopause was still barely part of the broader conversation around women’s health. Yet millions of women were right in the middle of it, often with very little idea what was happening to them or where to go for help.
So Claire, through the National Menopause Foundation, and I, through Perry, decided we wanted to change that.
Fast forward three years, and September is Perimenopause Awareness Month, September 22 is World Perimenopause Day, and this year we’re taking the conversation somewhere new: Capitol Hill.
And we’re not doing it alone. Liz Powell from the Women’s Health Advocates is making this day happen together with us, and Sharon Malone, Jayne Morgan, and Harita Raja will be leading the conversation with Claire and me that day.
We’ll be talking about what women are actually experiencing, what providers are seeing, where the gaps still are, and what needs to change in research, education, care, and policy.
For Perry, this feels like such a natural next step in our mission. We started with community, giving women a place to find each other and talk openly about perimenopause.
Then came provider education and Perry Academy. And now more and more, we’re finding ourselves in the rooms where decisions about women’s health are actually being made.
Quite a journey from that conversation four years ago. And pretty amazing to see how many people are now pushing this forward together.
