“It was a very special moment today.
I joined the late effects of cancer service in the Reproductive Medicine Unit at UCLH thirteen years ago. I was lucky to have Prof. Melanie Davies and Prof. Gerard Conway as mentors – they were the best I could have asked for and taught me that learning and communicating the uncertainties of medicine and helping patients make an informed choice was key!
Thousands of patients later, it is still the scale of what we do not know and how well we share it with our patients when they make clinical decisions – that remains the key learning takeaway.
Sharing the stage today and having conversations about how the service has evolved at UCLH was a bit of a trip down memory lane. Thank you, Menopause and Cancer CIC.
It turned out that I was even luckier when I subsequently crossed paths with Dani Binnington (the powerhouse she is!) and her team, who have single-handedly, like no other organisation, changed the landscape of menopause care for cancer survivors over the past 10 years.
I am forever grateful to have had the chance to do some amazing work with them.
‘Menopause and Cancer’ continues to push boundaries and advocates for cancer survivors and educates health professionals – the first Global Menopause and Cancer conference today was a fine example of it.
We have set the wheels in motion – now the future of cancer survivorship care will largely depend on young physicians, oncologists, hormone specialists, nurses, pharmacists, holistic experts, psychologists and other clinical specialist professionals of tomorrow who will carry the work forward (I am sure in a much better and faster way!) alongside Menopause and Cancer.
There were so many in the room today. The future is indeed bright!”
