Maria Satchi: Presenting 2 Topics at BFS Study Week on Male Fertility
Maria Satchi, Consultant Urological Surgeon and Andrologist at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, shared on LinkedIn:
“A busy and enjoyable day presenting 2 topics at British Fertility Society Study Week on Male Fertility.
Covering the basics of the anatomy of the male reproductive tract and linking this to 5 phases:
- spermatogenic control,
- production,
- maturation,
- delivery,
- transport.
I went through how variations in the anatomy at each level may cause disruption in any of these five phases.
With a rise in incidental findings of small testicular tumours on ultrasounds performed
Male fertility diagnostics, I covered advanced radiological imaging of contrast-enhanced ultrasound and strain elastography – the multiparametric ultrasound and its use in characterisation.
Any doubt? Think surveillance versus testicular-sparing surgery as opposed to 1st-line orchidectomy, as most often these lesions are benign.
To wrap up the day, we concluded with a fertility MDT of six complex cases – so much to learn from multi-specialty discussions!
Enjoyed meeting colleagues working across reproductive medicine from all over the country. Fantastic to see such interest in male fertility and the value of multidisciplinary working!
Great programme and organisation, Prof. Asif Muneer.”
