Angelo Tocci: Paying More Without Improving Assisted Reproduction Outcomes
Angelo Tocci, Gynecologist and Obstetrician, IVF consultant. Founder and Head of Donnamed Group, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper he authored, published in the Journal of Assisted Reproduction and Genetics:
”Paying more without improving assisted reproduction outcomes: The case of Italy.
In Italy, the majority of assisted reproduction cycles are currently performed by centers offering ‘add-on’ technologies-such as blastocyst culture, preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A), time-lapse imaging, DuoStim, and others-with the promise to increase the success rates of assisted reproduction.
A classic example is PGT-A, a technique that does not increase the rate of ‘take-home babies,’ reduce miscarriage rates, or shorten the time to pregnancy (Practice Committees of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology).
The use of preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy: a committee opinion. Fertil Steril. 2024 Sep;122(3):421-434). Furthermore, trophectoderm biopsy lacks a proven safety profile (Tocci 2020).
The systematic use of these methods has effectively reduced assisted reproduction success rates and live birth rates in fresh autologous cycles across much of the world. Moreover, it has vastly increased costs for patients (Weissman, Adashi, Gleicher).”
