Devora Lieberman: After Nearly 30 Years in IVF in Australia, I’m Retiring from Clinical Practice

“After nearly 30 years in IVF in Australia, I’m retiring from clinical practice.

It’s an odd sentence to write.

When I started working in reproductive medicine, the field looked very different. Over the past quarter of a century, I’ve witnessed extraordinary advances in science and technology, changes in how we practise, and an ever-expanding understanding of what we can offer our patients.

It has been intellectually challenging, sometimes frustrating, frequently exhilarating and always deeply rewarding.
But when I look back over those 30 years, it isn’t the advances in technology, the cycles or the statistics that stand out most. It’s the people.

The patients who have trusted me at some of the most personal and vulnerable moments of their lives. The colleagues who have challenged me, supported me and shared the unexpected highs and lows of clinical practice. And the many GPs and specialists who have entrusted their patients to my care.

Fertility medicine is a field in which we can never promise an outcome. What we can offer is thoughtful, compassionate, evidence-based care, honest conversations and a commitment to helping people navigate difficult decisions.

That has always been the part of my work that matters most to me.

I am enormously grateful to the wonderful team at City Fertility Sydney CBD, and I am delighted that my colleagues Dr Kaushi Arulpragasam and Dr Helen Peric will continue to care for patients in the future.

Although I am stepping away from clinical practice, my interest in reproductive medicine, the science, the ethics and the conversations that shape how we care for patients remains as strong as ever.

To my patients, colleagues, and everyone who has been part of these 30 years, thank you.

It has been one of the great privileges of my life.”
