“We’ve just come back from the AI Fertility conference, where everyone was talking about what AI will be able to do for fertility. Our presentation started with a question I think we need to answer first: where will it get the truth from?
Take one fertility journey. For the patient and the clinical team, everything is connected: history, medication, scans, lab work, decisions, and outcomes. The digital version of that journey is often scattered across an EMR, a lab system, images, PDFs, messages, and spreadsheets.
Even when we have the data, we tend to capture what happened, but not why. A medication dose changed from 225 IU to 300 IU. Was that because of a hormone result, follicle growth, the patient’s history or a clinician’s judgement? If we don’t know, what exactly are we asking AI to learn?
Most fertility AI today looks at something and makes a prediction. The next generation will participate in care alongside clinicians, embryologists, coordinators and patients. It could help bring the right information into a decision and capture the reasoning as part of the work. That is how we start building the dataset we will need in the future.
And this is where I think many clinics will fall behind. Buying AI tools is relatively easy. Building a connected record of care that those tools can understand and learn from takes longer, and it needs to start now.”
