An Opportunity to Raise Awareness of the Importance of Safe, Accessible Abortion Care – RCOG

Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) shared on LinkedIn:

”Today, 28 September, is International Safe Abortion Day, an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of safe, accessible abortion care and the work still needed to ensure women and girls can access it.

To mark the day, we’re supporting the Europe for Abortion Rights campaign by illuminating the spiral staircase at our Union Street headquarters in green. This represents the colour of the global abortion rights movement as a visible sign of our support.

It is estimated that more than 25 million unsafe abortions take place globally each year.

Unsafe abortion can cause serious complications and is a preventable cause of maternal death and ill health. Almost every injury and death from unsafe abortion is preventable through effective contraception, safe abortion care and timely post-abortion care.

RCOG President Dr Alison Wright said:

‘At the RCOG, we firmly believe that high-quality abortion care is an essential part of sexual and reproductive health. International Safe Abortion Day is an important opportunity to recognise progress and reaffirm the need for safe, accessible and rights-based care.’ ”
