“One of the sessions that really caught my attention at the conference was on Oncofertility, the intersection between cancer care and reproductive medicine.
Cancer treatment can be life-saving, but some treatments can also affect fertility.
This raises an important question:
How do we ensure that young people diagnosed with cancer are not only given the chance to survive, but also the opportunity to preserve their reproductive options for the future?
The more I learn about assisted reproductive technology, the more interested I become in this area.
Oncofertility sits at such an interesting intersection of oncology, reproductive medicine, embryology, fertility preservation, and patient-centred care.
And it has made me curious about the Nigerian context:
- How accessible are fertility preservation options for cancer patients in Nigeria?
- Are patients routinely counselled about fertility preservation before treatment?
- What are the gaps in our current systems, and how can embryologists contribute to closing them?
I don’t have all the answers yet. And that’s exactly why I’m interested.
As I continue my journey in clinical embryology, oncofertility is an area I would love to learn more about, research, and hopefully contribute to in the future.
There is so much more to embryology than the laboratory.
Sometimes, it is about helping preserve a possibility that a patient may need years later.
Oncofertility deserves more conversations in Nigeria.”
