Devyanshi Dixit։ Why Do Some Women Keep Getting UTIs?

Devyanshi Dixit, Program Manager at CLS Event and Publication and Conference Manager at the 12th Global Summit on Gynecology, Fertility and Women’s Health, shared on LinkedIn:

“Why Do Some Women Keep Getting UTIs?

Another UTI. Another antibiotic. Another recurrence.

But why does it keep happening?

Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common, but repeated symptoms don’t always mean the same thing is happening every time.

What Could Be Behind Recurrent UTIs?

  • Bacterial persistence – some bacteria can survive treatment and contribute to recurrence.
  • Sexual activity – can increase the risk of UTIs in some women.
  • Menopause and lower estrogen – hormonal changes can affect the urinary and vaginal environment.
  • Incomplete bladder emptying – retained urine can increase infection risk.
  • Changes in the vaginal microbiome – shifts in protective bacteria may influence susceptibility.
  • Antibiotic exposure – repeated treatment can contribute to resistance and disrupt the microbiome.

But here’s the part many people miss:

Burning, urgency, or frequent urination doesn’t always mean a UTI.

Similar symptoms can occur with vaginal infections, genitourinary syndrome of menopause, bladder pain syndrome, pelvic-floor dysfunction, or other urinary conditions.

That’s why repeated symptoms deserve proper evaluation rather than automatically repeating the same treatment.

The Future of UTI Care

Researchers are exploring urinary and vaginal microbiomes, rapid diagnostics, non-antibiotic prevention, vaccines, and personalized approaches to reduce recurrent infections while limiting unnecessary antibiotic use.

The goal isn’t simply to treat the next UTI.

It’s to understand why this woman keeps getting them in the first place.
