“Could AI change the way we select embryos in IVF?
Embryo selection is one of the most important steps in the IVF laboratory.
Traditionally, embryologists evaluate embryos based mainly on their morphology at specific time points.
With time-lapse imaging, we can continuously observe embryo development and follow important morphokinetic events without repeatedly removing embryos from the incubator.
More recently, artificial intelligence has been introduced to analyze these images and identify patterns that may not always be obvious to the human eye.
But an important question remains:
Can AI truly improve embryo selection and clinical outcomes?
Current research is promising, but more high-quality prospective studies are still needed before AI can be considered a replacement for embryologists’ expertise.
For me, this is one of the most interesting directions in modern embryology: combining technology with human expertise to make embryo assessment more precise.”
