” ‘Take a trip and relax. I bet you’ll get pregnant.’
I bet you’ve heard this one before.
If you’ve experienced infertility, you might have heard it more times than you can count.
Go on holiday.
Stop thinking about it.
Take the pressure off.
Relax.
It’s as though pregnancy is just waiting for you on the other side of a week in the sun.
I know people mean well. But when you’re experiencing infertility, this kind of advice isn’t received as intended. It can leave you wondering whether you’re somehow doing it wrong.
You can go on holiday and still not get pregnant.
You can enjoy yourself.
You can laugh.
You can switch off from work.
You can have the most amazing time.
And you can still come home not pregnant.
Infertility isn’t something you can simply relax your way out of.
Sometimes people don’t need another tip, theory or story about someone who ‘went away and came back pregnant.’
Of course, it can happen. But for many people experiencing infertility, a holiday isn’t going to change the underlying reason they’re struggling to conceive.
They just need ‘I’m sorry. That sounds really hard.’
