Abisola Malumi։ Something You Should Understand Before Choosing a Fertility Clinic Based on Its Success Rate
Abisola Malumi, Clinic Manager at Fertigold Fertility Clinic, shared on LinkedIn:
“Before you choose a fertility clinic based on its success rate, there’s something you should understand.
It is very easy to see a clinic advertising a particular success rate and immediately think, ‘That will be my chance too.’
But fertility treatment does not work that way.
Success rates are usually based on groups of patients, and outcomes can vary depending on factors such as age, the cause of infertility, the type of treatment being used, previous treatment history, and other patient-specific factors. The CDC also cautions that comparing clinic success rates can be difficult because clinics may treat different patient populations and use different treatment approaches.
So when you are considering a fertility clinic, don’t just ask, ‘What is your success rate?’
Ask what that number actually represents.
- Is it pregnancy rate or live birth rate?
- Is it per cycle, per embryo transfer, or another measure?
- What patient group does the figure relate to?
- And most importantly, what does it mean in the context of your own situation?
Numbers can give you useful information, but they need context.
A fertility journey is personal, and your treatment decisions should be based on a proper discussion with your fertility care team, not simply on the biggest percentage you see online.
Sometimes, understanding the number is just as important as knowing the number.
What is one fertility-related number you have seen online that you wish someone had explained properly?”
