Filipa Rafael: Training and Performance Monitoring in ICSI and Embryo Biopsy at ESHRE Campus

Filipa Rafael, Founder and Scientific Director at Fertilidade em Foco (Fertility in Focus), shared on LinkedIn:

”Completing training once does not guarantee permanent competence.

Today, on the final morning of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) Campus in Lisbon, the programme turns to training and performance monitoring in ICSI and embryo biopsy.

This matters because micromanipulation is operator-dependent.

Competence develops through structured training, supervised practice, objective assessment and sufficient experience.
But it also needs to be maintained.

A laboratory should know more than whether a procedure was completed.

It should be able to evaluate performance over time, recognise deviations, compare outcomes appropriately and respond before a weak signal becomes a recurring problem.

That requires:

  • clearly defined competencies
  • objective indicators
  • documented supervision
  • appropriate case volumes
  • regular review of outcomes
  • a culture in which difficulties can be disclosed early

Quality assurance should not be experienced as surveillance or punishment.
Its purpose is to make learning visible and patient care safer.

Experience matters.

But experience without feedback can simply make the same variation more familiar.
How does your team assess and maintain procedural competence?”
