Nibhash Kumar: Do We Really Understand IVF As Well As We Think We Do?
Nibhash Kumar, Junior Embryologist and Quality Manager at Indira IVF Group, shared on LinkedIn:
“Do we really understand IVF as well as we think we do?
We are innovating with AI, microfluidics, time-lapse imaging, advanced culture media, and various laboratory systems and procedures designed to improve embryo development, selection, and implantation.
- But why don’t these techniques work in every case?
- Today, why does no one talk about how we can increase the live birth rate when we talk about how IVF labs work?
- Why is the IVF field so complicated?
And the main question is: Do these advancements really help increase pregnancy rates or live birth rates?
If they really increase the live birth rate, then why don’t they work in every case?
I think we are missing something. We are lacking somewhere.
Yes, IVF has helped millions of couples have babies, but it still does not work for every infertile couple, and not everyone achieves a live birth.
So, what are we still missing?
Perhaps the next major breakthrough in reproductive medicine will not simply be another technology, another culture medium, or another embryo-selection tool.
Perhaps it will come from understanding which biological factor is actually limiting reproductive success in each individual patient.
Because ultimately, the goal of IVF is not simply to produce more blastocysts, improve morphology, or optimize laboratory parameters.
The ultimate goal is a healthy live birth.
I would genuinely like to hear the thoughts of embryologists, reproductive medicine specialists, researchers and scientists:
Are we truly improving the final outcome of IVF, or are we sometimes optimizing intermediate steps without fully understanding the biology that determines live birth?”
