Lucy Froese: Why My Clients Have Access to Me for SOS Calls During Their IVF Cycles

Lucy Froese, Fertility and IVF Coach, shared on LinkedIn:

“I was on the train to my embryo transfer when my phone rang.

It was the clinic.

And before I’d even answered, I feared the worst.

We were on our way in for my day 5 transfer.

Instead, I was told my embryos weren’t quite ready.

They wanted to give them more time and see how they developed over the course of the day.

So I got off the train at the next stop.

My husband carried on to work.

And I got on a bus home.

That bus journey felt very, very long.

Because within minutes my mind had gone from:

They need a little more time.

to:

  • What if neither of them develops?
  • What if this is it?
  • All the injections.
  • The appointments.
  • The emotional ups and downs.
  • The money.

And now there might not even be an embryo to transfer.

I remember thinking, How am I going to cope if this doesn’t work?

So I called my coach.

She couldn’t tell me what was going to happen to those embryos.

But she helped me come back from everything I was imagining might happen.

We talked through what I was feeling.

I calmed down.

And somehow I got through the rest of that day without spending every minute in the worst-case scenario.

The following day, we set off for the clinic again.

This time my phone didn’t ring.

We arrived.

And there they were.

Two beautiful embryos on the screen.

I can still remember the embryologist pointing to one of them and telling me how perfect it looked.

She said she loved it.

Both embryos were transferred.

And one of them became my daughter, Eloise.

She’s 11 now.

I sometimes think about that bus journey home.

Because nothing about the situation changed.

I still didn’t know whether those embryos would continue developing.

My coach couldn’t guarantee me a transfer.

She couldn’t guarantee me a baby.

But I didn’t have to sit with that fear on my own.

She was there when I needed her.

And that has stayed with me.

Because years later, it’s one of the reasons I make myself available to my clients during their IVF cycles.

I call them SOS calls.

Those moments when something happens.

The clinic calls.

A scan doesn’t go as expected.

You’re waiting for an update.

Or your mind simply starts racing towards the worst-case scenario.

You don’t want to wait until your next coaching session to unpack what’s just happened.

You need support in that moment.

That’s why my clients have access to me for SOS calls during their IVF cycles.

Someone who understands what this feels like, who can help you process what’s happening and bring you back to where you actually are, rather than where your fear has already taken you.

Because I remember exactly what it felt like to need that person.

And I’m very grateful I had her.”
