Nina Brown: Until a Few Weeks Ago, I Didn’t Even Know Silent Endometriosis Existed…
Nina Brown, Protection Advisor at Pam Brown Mortgages and Mentor at African Youth Arise (AYA), shared on LinkedIn:
”Yesterday I was diagnosed with silent endometriosis.
I went privately to investigate my PCOS and the fact that we’ve been struggling with infertility. My doctor immediately suggested a laparoscopy to check for endometriosis – even though I had none of the classic symptoms.
I’ve been incredibly lucky that I haven’t experienced debilitating pain or particularly heavy periods. In fact, if I hadn’t had this investigation, if I wasn’t trying for a baby, I may never have known.
But they checked… and they found it.
I was diagnosed with silent endometriosis. 20-25% of people with endometriosis have silent endometriosis– yet the majority don’t find out unless they are struggling with infertility. The condition is exactly the same in terms of what it does to your body internally… I just count myself lucky I don’t have the symptoms that come with it!
Until a few weeks ago, I didn’t even know silent endometriosis existed. I heard about it for the first time on a podcast with Abbey Clancy, and now I find myself living with that diagnosis.
Had I gone through the NHS route, the journey to a fertility appointment could have taken a significant amount of time, up to 18 months, and because I didn’t present with the ‘classic’ symptoms of endometriosis, I’m not sure it would have been high on the list of things to investigate.
I feel incredibly lucky – and incredibly grateful – that I have private medical insurance, which gave me access to a specialist who listened, investigated, and wanted to look beyond the obvious.
Having the endometriosis removed doesn’t mean that everything will suddenly fall into place. I still have PCOS, and my body is still recovering from the effects of Cushing’s disease and everything it has been through.
But it gives us another piece of the puzzle, and another chance.
And for that, I’m incredibly grateful.
I’m sharing this because I had no idea that you could have endometriosis without the pain, heavy periods or other symptoms we so often associate with it.
Sometimes, you don’t know what you don’t know.
And sometimes, all it takes is one doctor looking a little deeper.”
