Samer R. Hammoudeh: What Should We Really Measure in an IVF Laboratory?
Samer R. Hammoudeh, IVF Lab Director at Fakih IVF Fertility Center, shared on LinkedIn:
“What Should We Really Measure in an IVF Laboratory?
IVF laboratories have traditionally focused on outcomes such as:
- Fertilisation rate
- Blastocyst formation
- Good-quality embryos
- Clinical pregnancy
- Live birth
But I believe the next evolution of IVF laboratory quality is about going beyond outcome rates.
A modern IVF laboratory should increasingly ask:
- How stable are our culture conditions?
- How consistent are temperature, pH and gas parameters?
- How reproducible are our laboratory processes?
- How do competency and staff wellbeing affect performance?
- Are we using our laboratory data to identify trends before they become problems?
- How much variation exists between embryologists, incubators, procedures and shifts?
The strongest IVF laboratories of the future may not simply be the ones achieving the highest pregnancy rates.
They will be the laboratories that can demonstrate consistency, control variation and continuously improve their processes.
In other words:
Quality in IVF is not only about achieving a good outcome – it is about creating a system capable of producing good outcomes consistently.
This is where laboratory quality management, digitalisation, traceability and data-driven continuous improvement become increasingly important.
The future IVF laboratory may look less like a traditional laboratory and more like a high-reliability clinical system.
What do you think should be the most important KPI for an IVF laboratory?”
