Prarthana Mukhopadhyay: What Do We Do Differently Because DFI Is High?
Prarthana Mukhopadhyay, Junior Embryologist at Srishti Infertility Clinic, shared on LinkedIn:
“Andrology Troubleshooting #4
High DFI. Now what?
We find sperm DNA fragmentation.
The number is high.
But what can we actually do with that information?
- Can we treat the cause?
- Can we improve the sample?
- Should we change the ART strategy?
- And what does a high DFI actually mean for a couple who has already experienced recurrent pregnancy loss?
There are options that may be considered:
- addressing male-factor causes,
- lifestyle/antioxidant approaches,
- shorter abstinence,
- varicocele treatment,
- or in selected cases, alternative sperm sources for ICSI.
But here’s the uncomfortable part: A high DFI doesn’t automatically tell us which intervention will work.
So perhaps the real challenge isn’t: ‘Is the DFI high?’
It’s: ‘What do we do differently because it’s high?’
Where do you think DFI actually changes clinical decision-making?”
