Sukhbir Singh: Why Are Canadians Leaving the Country for Endometriosis Care?
Sukhbir Singh, Staff Physician and Head of Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Newborn Care at The Ottawa Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper he co-authored with colleagues published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Canada (JOGC):
“Why are Canadians leaving the country for endometriosis care, including surgery?
Our newly published research in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Canada highlights a concerning reality: patients are travelling abroad to access specialized care, often because of long wait times and concerns about access to expertise in Canada.
Key findings from respondents who were considering or have accessed care abroad:
- 80.5% were dissatisfied with their care in Canada.
- Nearly 90% of those who underwent surgery abroad were satisfied with their care.
- $31,500 CAD was the average total cost per patient for surgery abroad.
The message is clear: Access to timely, specialized endometriosis care matters.
We need to improve referral pathways, greater access to multidisciplinary expertise, and coordination of care.
Patients should not have to leave Canada or face substantial financial burdens to access the care they need.
Improving access to endometriosis care is not just a healthcare priority. It is an issue of equity.

Mathew Leonardi, Associate Professor at McMaster University, added:
“An important yet hardly talked about subject. Our patients should be able to access care at home and all of us in Canada have a role to play in ensuring this future!”
