Justin Houman: Can a Varicocele Lower Your Testosterone Levels?

Justin Houman, Men’s Health Urologist at Tower Urology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, shared on LinkedIn:

“For colleagues evaluating young men with low testosterone: examine for a varicocele.

Men with varicoceles tend to have lower testosterone levels, likely because pooled venous blood raises testicular temperature and impairs Leydig cell function.

Microsurgical varicocelectomy raises serum testosterone on average.

It doesn’t work in every man, and it won’t take a low level to a high one, but for some men it can delay or avoid medication, including TRT, which matters when fertility is still on the table.

Happy to see these patients in Los Angeles and across the US.”
