Justin Houman: Who Needs the Varicocele Fixed?
Justin Houman, Men’s Health Urologist at Tower Urology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, shared on LinkedIn:
“For colleagues deciding which men with a varicocele to send for repair: it’s not for everybody.
When semen parameters are normal, there’s no testicular pain, the testicles are developing normally and testosterone is normal, the varicocele is not impacting testicular function, and there is no role for varicocelectomy.
Three scenarios where repair makes sense:
- Abnormal semen parameters: concentration, motility or morphology.
- Testicular pain with a varicocele, from venous congestion. Varicocelectomy for pain is something we do quite often.
- Testicular size asymmetry, with the varicocele on the smaller side. Repair can improve volume on that side and, more importantly, testicular function, including sperm counts and testosterone production.
My full long form on varicocele surgery vs embolization premieres Sunday, October 25, on YouTube.
Happy to see these patients in Los Angeles and across the US.”
