Samantha Payne: NSW Releases Final Report on Fertility Support and Assisted Reproductive Treatment
Samantha Payne, Co-Founder and CEO at The Pink Elephants Support Network, shared on LinkedIn:
This week, the NSW Legislative Council’s Select Committee on Fertility Support and Assisted Reproductive Treatment tabled its final report, and early pregnancy loss is firmly on the record.
In May, I gave evidence to the committee, including my own experience of miscarriage. I shared it because the system I walked through, which handed me a sticky note reading ‘ERPC’, made me wait days for care and left me with no number to call at 3am, is still the system too many families meet today.
The committee found that women and families experiencing pregnancy loss must receive appropriate and compassionate care, and that more support is needed after miscarriage. Its recommendations include:
A NSW pregnancy loss register with a self-reporting component. Pink Elephants called for this in our submission, because you can’t plan services for losses you don’t count. We’ve been advocating for better miscarriage data since 2022 when we launched the Count Our Babies campaign.
Ongoing funding for organisations supporting people after miscarriage, including peer-based support and tailored care for rural and regional communities. Our Not Just A Loss report in 2025 highlighted many of the inequities RandR families face.
More Early Pregnancy Assessment Services, especially in the regions.
Pregnancy loss in the Years 7-10 curriculum and a statewide awareness campaign. Changing the narrative much earlier on in the piece will ensure more validation of loss at any gestation.
There’s more, and I’ll share an in-depth piece on this for now, I want to thank and share the win. Advocacy work is hard and can take a lot of behind-the-scenes effort.
Thank you to the committee and its Chair, the Hon Sarah Mitchell MLC; to Claire Brett, our Rural and Regional Ambassador, who also gave evidence; and to every person who had the courage to share their story.
Recommendations are a beginning, not an outcome. With a NSW election in March, we’ll be asking every party to commit to implementing them.
Because no one should walk the journey of early pregnancy loss alone.”
