Pauliina Valpas: The AIFertility Conference Was First and Foremost a Conference for Innovators
Pauliina Valpas, CCO at OTO Fertility, shared on LinkedIn:
”The AIFertility conference was first and foremost a conference for innovators, people driven to improve fertility care through innovation.
Innovation asks you to be comfortable with not knowing, exploring and sitting with difficult questions. At OTO Fertility, our technology was first used in space medicine, then applied in elite sport, and now in reproductive health.
Innovation needs to be balanced with both research and regulation. Everyone in the field needs to feel safe with the solutions being created, while innovators still need room to push the envelope.
Christine Allen’s sobering session reminded us that innovators must understand and respect what regulation asks of them, including how it differs between countries. Regulators, in turn, need to protect patients and clinicians without stifling innovation.
The debate between Ying Cheong and Rabi Ahmed-Odia on whether RCTs are the best way to evaluate AI was as insightful as it was lively.
For us, it was other people’s research that first pointed us towards fertility care, and we keep being committed to continuing that work with partners like Queen’s University, Inception Fertility, Avenues and Mehiläinen.
Above all, nobody innovates alone, and that sums up the conference for me. It brought together curious, ambitious people working on different angles of the same goal: helping more people build families, with less cost and less physiological and psychological strain.
Carole Gilling-Smith showed this beautifully by sharing her collaboration with Cecilie Jakobsen. Carole also wins the prize for best slides and most entertaining presentation (see image).
Thank you once more, Dr. Cristina Hickman and Nikica Zaninovic, for bringing us all together.
You have created something truly special.”
