Tigest Tamrat: AI’s Role in Sexual and Reproductive Health
Tigest Tamrat, Scientist at World Health Organization, shared a post by HRP Research on LinkedIn:
“So much to unpack from one the largest scoping reviews on how AI is being applied in sexual and reproductive health (SRH), analyzing over 2600 studies globally!
Some key takeaways:
- Despite recent focus on LLMs and chatbots, predominant use of AI was for screening and diagnostics, such as detecting complications and predicting risk
- Maternal heath was the leading health topic, but also extensive use for infertility care and reproductive cancers
- Strong reliance on datasets from high income institutions, such as repositories and registries
- Some questionable studies, such as extent of data minining on sensitive topics in SRH—highlighting the need for better safeguards and updating research ethics for the AI age (more on this later)
- Less than 10% studies used AI in real world settings; majority (94%!) were developing and evaluating models for eventual/potential use.
These model assessment studies will soon probably transition to real world contexts — how are we preparing for their integration into health systems and analysing evidence surrounding their safe and effective use?”
Quoting HRP Research’s post:
“Can AI transform sexual and reproductive health?
A new comprehensive scoping review analyzed 12,823 citations and 2,666 studies to map how AI is being applied across SRH domains. Here’s what stood out:
- Top areas: Maternal health (44.9%) & cervical cancer (29.2%)
- Main use: Screening and diagnosis (74.2%)
- Emerging roles: Fertility care, HIV prevention, even chatbots for SRH education
Gaps: Limited real-world deployment (only 6.4%), uneven geographic representation, and lack of external validation
