“Chronic Chorioamnionitis with Eosinophils (CCe):-
What Is It?
- Chronic inflammation of the fetal membranes (chorion + amnion)
- Key feature: Eosinophil infiltration (not typical in standard chorioamnionitis)
- Considered an allergic/immune-mediated pattern rather than infectious
Key Characteristics
Feature Description
Timing Chronic process (weeks), not acute infection
Cell type Eosinophils + lymphocytes, plasma cells
Location Chorionic plate, amnion, chorion laeve
Absence Neutrophils (unlike acute chorioamnionitis)
Allergic Pattern Explained
- Eosinophils = hallmark of Type 2 immune response
- Suggests fetal allergic sensitization in utero
Possible triggers:
- Maternal allergens crossing placenta
- Fetal immune response to environmental antigens
- Autoimmune/alloimmune mechanisms
Clinical Associations
- Recurrent pregnancy loss
- Preterm birth
- Fetal growth restriction
- Possible link to childhood allergies/asthma (emerging research)
Diagnosis
- Histopathology (placental examination)
- Look for: eosinophilic infiltrates in membranes, often with mast cells
Bottom Line
Not an infection—it’s a chronic allergic-type inflammation of the placenta involving eosinophils, suggesting aberrant fetal immune activation.”
