The Impact of Aging on AMH Levels Explored – Fertility Plus
Fertility Plus shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Why Your AMH ‘Crashes’ in Your 40s Even When Your Periods Look Normal
As women age, the number of tiny egg sacs in the ovaries (follicles) decreases. These follicles produce a hormone called AMH, which is often used as a fertility marker.
A recent study revealed that:
- Younger women have about 46 small follicles on average.
- Women aged 45-50 have only around 17.
With fewer follicles, less AMH is produced. In fact, the AMH produced per follicle in women aged 45-50 is about 11 times lower than in younger women! Some even produce only about 1% of the AMH seen in younger women’s follicles.
Additionally, as age increases, another hormone called FSH rises because the ovary sends weaker signals back to the brain. While high FSH tries to push the ovaries harder, it can also lead to even lower AMH production.
So, in your late 40s:
- There are fewer follicles.
- Each follicle produces much less AMH.
This explains why AMH levels may appear low, even if menstrual cycles remain regular and ovulation still occurs. Remember, AMH isn’t just about counting eggs left; it reflects changes in hormone interactions as well.
