NIPT Accuracy in Twin Pregnancies with Early Fetal Loss – CFEF

At the last NJEF 2026 Congress, Dr. Nicolas Bourgon presented us with a literature review with the publications of the year 2025 that had caught his attention.
We offer you, throughout the year, to share some of them with you.

Let’s start with this one…

This is the TRIDENT-2 study conducted in the Netherlands with a large cohort.

She was interested in the time taken to perform NIPT and its reliability for twin pregnancies with the early loss of one of the fetuses.

Two situations were studied:

  • Type I: the 2nd sac is empty (no embryo visible)
  • Type II: Embryo present but not evolving

The study shows that:

  • women with Type II have many more abnormal NIPT (but with a non-negligible false positive rate, probably because of the release of fetal DNA after fetal death)
  • greater reliability of NIPT after 15 weeks of pregnancy
  • And above all, a concordance rate (so without false-positive or negative) that is close to 100% when you wait 8 weeks after fetal loss.
