National Stillbirth Priority Setting Partnership in Australia Leads by Kirstin Tindal – Stillbirth CRE

“The outcomes of a national priority setting partnership led by Kirstin Tindal, published in BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth, outline renewed stillbirth research priorities in Australia.
Comprehensive consultations identified 25 research questions in six key areas:
- Determine the causes of, and pathways that lead to stillbirth
- Identify and implement strategies to prevent stillbirth
- Build the capacity of health services and systems
- Understand and improve care for families after perinatal loss
- Ensure culturally safe and responsive care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families
- Ensure culturally safe and responsive care for families of migrant and refugee background.
To meet the needs of women and families in Australia to reduce the burden of stillbirth, we recommend that researchers, clinicians, policy makers, and community organisations:
- Allocate resources and funding to implement these priorities
- Actively involve bereaved family members to co-design prioritised research
- Strengthen collaborations to address priorities and reduce research wastage
- Enhance engagement with priority populations to improve pregnancy outcomes
- Evaluate the impact of these priorities over the next five years
